How many of us promise in a new year that we will eat healthier, have more energy, exercise more and kick out a certain negative nutrition habit? Well, if you are one of the many women who want to take on a healthier life style this year, let me help you. As you know, in the beginning of my book, Mom-a-licious, there is a pantry, refrigerator and freezer makeover section. Here, I share with you some of these tips to get you started. Reclaiming the Pantry Kick out (for the full list, see "Mom-a-licious: fresh, fast, family food for the hot mama in you!": - artificial sweeteners (even if they are made from "real sugars")
- corn syrup
- refined sugars
- hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oil
- dyes (especially red #3 and #40, and yellow #5)
- bleached flours
- sugary cereals (candy for breakfast)
- fake fruit snacks for kids (these are usually loaded with corn syrup, dye, and hydrogenated oil)
- instant rice
- peanut butters filled with sugar, corn syrup, and hydrogenated oil
Bring In: - extra virgin olive oil
- pure maple syrup
- beans
- whole grains (quinoa, bulgur, steel-cut oats, brown rice)
- natural peanut and almond butters
- dry spices: granulated garlic, cinnamon, cumin, curry powder, dried dill, peppercorns
- kosher salt
- organic chicken broth
- a few pasta varieties (whole wheat Penne Rigate and egg noodles are good choices)
- balsamic vinegar
- tamari
Facing the Refrigerator Now that you have cleared the pantry and filled it with healthy, preservative-free foods, it is time to do the same in your refrigerator and freezer. kick out: - low-fat mayo (check the ingredients…less fat, but more sugar and chemicals. If you are going to use regular mayo, just use less)
- fake butter spreads (loaded with synthetic ingredients…again, it is better to use a SMALL amount of butter)
- soda, diet and regular
- processed lunch meats
- salad dressings with hydrogenated oil
- canned Parmesan cheese
- sugary "fruit" juices/drinks
The mere exercise of clearing your shelves will help you breathe deeper and easier. It is time to bring in the healthy fresh foods that will add new vitality to your family, and increase the confidence that comes with building a healthier home. bring in: - organic milk (if you are going to do only one thing organic, start here!)
- kefir
- organic butter
- organic plain yogurt
- cheese (real Parmesan, raw cheddar, Brie)
- apples
- citrus (lemons and limes, grapefruits, tangerines)
- broccoli
- carrots
- celery
- grape tomatoes
- garlic
- onions
- fresh herbs (parsley, cilantro, basil, rosemary, mint and dill)
- grain mustard
- tofu
- unsweetened juice (mix with sparkling water for a soda substitute)
- sparkling water
