Thank you so much for coming into bemomalicious.com. Each week I will blog about the food, events, products and women that inspire me and the women I work so closely with every day. This week, I’m inspired by our new site—a place to learn weekly kitchen and cooking tips, recipes, dinner you can make TONIGHT that is easy and healthy, and a place to connect with me and other families about the issues you most care about. As more and more of us expand our communities on line and as we share and learn about our health through on line resources, I hope you will see bemomalicious.com as a central place to visit each week. Please let me know what is on your mind and what you would like to see more of—or just ask questions about cooking, groceries, the pantry, food storage and prep and I’ll help you through it. I know it can be overwhelming, but this is what I’m here for. Looking forward to connecting, inspiring and helping each of you find and retain your momalicious spark!

I can't believe summer is already over. My daughter Chiara, started back to school but I am still in the summer mind. The day-to-day lunch preparation just snuck up on me.
I dont' know about you, but I am ready for the routine of school to be back --just not the early mornings and lunch packing. It is time to re-enlist my favorite school year time saver, the freezer sandwich! I'm excited to be wiring from New York where i will be sharing this tip on Friday morning on the CBS Early Morning Show.

I was back visiting one of my favorite cities for the All Things Organic show. Celia and I fit a run in on Wednesday morning and visited the Green Market for some early summer berries and fresh herbs. I was fortunate to spend a year in Chicago when my husband was at North Western University for his MBA. If I had thicker skin and could hack a 30 degree April, I would move back in a heart beat. The people, culture, history, and FOOD rank it as one of my favorite spots in the US.

Speaking of food….Taleggio flat bread with truffle oil, Brussels sprouts and shaved fennel salad, sour cherry pound cake...all mouthwateringly DELICIOUS and served up at one of my favorite restaurants anywhere, Avec, in Chicago! Koren Grieveson, the chef, brings s
ome of the most simple, yet complex, flavors together and always has me inspired.
I also had the chance to go to one of my other favorite restaurants...Art Smith's Table 52. The biscuits out of the wood burning oven make my mouth water just thinking of them. When you walk into this little jewel box tucked away on Elm street you feel as if you are in Art’s ho
me kitchen (a fancy one at that). Make sure and check it out if you are in Chicago (but make reservations!) |

I traveled to 3 states in 2 days....California to Texas to North Carolina with in 24 hours.
After a great work week in CA that started with the InStyle and Environmental Media Awards luncheon, “The Busy Mom’s Guide To Greener Living” where I spoke about the importance of eating organic (while guests feasted on a menu with O Organics ingredients). We then moved on to San Diego for a few days filled with food, family, friends, and filming.

Pregnancy Awareness Month Kick-Off Event
Santa Monica, CaliforniaMay 6, 2009
I have to say, there are few things quite as beautiful as a pregnant woman. This was completely evident as I had the privilege to be part of the PAM (Pregnancy Awareness Month) kick-off event in Los Angeles this past weekend hosted by Anna Getty http://www.pregnancyawarenessmonth.com. Babies, bellies, and children were abounding!
Not only is cooking and healthy eating a passion of mine, but making sure that women have the tools and knowledge to empower themselves for a healthy pregnancy and child development is cornerstone.
I had the fun part of creating a lunch that everyone could snack on while getting to hear such great speakers as Dr. Alan Greene, renowned pediatrician and author, Christopher Gavigan, CEO of Healthy Child Healthy World and Sheila Hollender, co-founder of Seventh Generation, or while enjoying a fashion show with the latest hot mom trends. As many of you know, keeping up on exercise is something I struggle with (if only shopping for a great pair of shoes could sculpt the body like Pilates...). Too bad for me that when Chiara, my daughter, was young Lisa Druxman's fantastic Stroller Strides had yet to launch. Check out what is going on in your neighborhood: www.strollerstrides.com

Recipe for Success
I had the privilege of working with the after school program for Recipe for Success at MacGregor Elementary School in Houston, TX last week. What an amazing afternoon I had. First, the kids' enthusiasm for cooking is so encouraging. It reminds me that by taking the time to talk about what great foods are out there and how to utilize them you can build a lifelong relationship with food that is healthy and delicious. The kids were making aguas frescas (a blend of fruits, seeds, sugar and water, traditionally from Latin America). They used different ingredients from their garden as well as local fruits. Some of my favorite combinations were mint, lemon, strawberry and papaya and there was a fantastic basil, strawberry and orange drink. I brought in agave nectar to substitute for the sugar. I love seeing how creative everyone is with the same ingredients to choose from. There were no two drinks alike. I learned a new trick from one of the budding chefs...he took papaya and pressed it through the handheld juicer...it got the juice out and made the pulp easy to stir into the drink! I'm really excited to return at the beginning of March when the kids put on their Spring Fling. They will be cooking and serving a full meal to their families and teachers. |
